if he stole something hi is not my friend. thieves drive up the
prices for the rest of us. i would turn him in even without a reward.

Nope. But I would sit him down and give him a good lecture about how not to shoplift. Then threaten to go to authority next time.
That's what friends are for. At least he didn't commit a murder. That's a whole other story.
