Absolutely not, for stays 30 days or less U.S. citizens are granted "permission" from the Thai government to stay for the purposes of tourism. Technically, this is not a visa on arrival, and no visa is actually issued. For stays longer than 30 days you can apply for a 60 day tourist visa at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in the U.S. before you leave, or you can leave Thailand (for example to Cambodia), cross the border and immediately return and they will give you an additional 30 days, you can do this two times, for a total of 90 days. Go to the Thai Emabassy website at www.thaiemdc.org and follow the links to consular affairs, it'll give you all the information you need. If you're staying 30 days or less, just have a valid passport and you will have no problem, good luck!

The website has a downloadable information sheet. However, if you only read the first few pages, it seems that you will need a visa. But, keep reading, U.S. citizens (and those from 40 other countries) "may enter Thailand without a visa in accordance with Ministry of Interior's regulation for a maximum stay of 30 days for purpose of Tourism only". If going to work or business, you will need a Non-immigrant visa (USD 50.00 per entry or USD 125 per multiple entry) which requires an invitation letter from Thailand.

you will get a visa on arrival in Thailand which is valid for a period of 30 days. If you plan to stay longer then 30 days you can applie for a tourist visa at immigrations or do as many do and cross the border to Cambodia and return to for a new 30 day visa.

It's already been answered, but just a bit of clarification. YES you need a visa to get into thailand, NO you do not need to get it ahead of time. You can get a 30 day tourist visa when you enter the country, any longer than 30 days seek out your nearest Thai embassy and apply within.

Yes, you do but, you do not need to get one in the US. The Thai government will issue you one when you arrive at no cost. It's good for 30 days.
If you staying longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for a 60 day visa either before you leave or upon your arrival or near the end of the 30 days apply for extension of your visa. Cost in US, about $20-25, my friend just got one for a 40 day trip.

Oh yes, you will also need a passport if you have not already gotten one. I hear it takes 3 to 6 weeks by mail. Some dunderhead moved the processing facility near New Orleans last year and really mucked things up.
Good luck
