Garlic bread is served with pasta for several reason:

1) The bread itself absorbs all the sauce
2) The garlisc in the bread brings out the tomatoe taste and the other flavors like spices
3)It is also traditional in Italy to eat it with some sort of pasta

Here in Italy garlic bread isn't served with spaghetti.
Furthermore the closest thing to garlic bread that comes to mind is bruschetta, which is an appetizer.
The real Italian bread doesn't have garlic.

Bread is served with pasta to soak up the leftover sauce after all of the pasta is gone. Garlic bread is used because it is better than regular bread and its taste compliments the sauce well.

#1 Try a side salad with just basic stuff in it. Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, bell pappers, onions, black olives, croutons, and some type of oil and vinegar based dressing like Italian or a vinaigrette. #2 You could make an antipasto like a Mozzarella Caprice. Buy a fresh mozzarella ball (the kind that comes in water and it's soft) Cut it into quarter inch slices, lay 3 of them on a small plate, slice a tomato into quarter inch slices and lay 3 slices on top of the mozzarella. Chop some fresh basil and sprinkle it over everything. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil and blasamic vinegar over everything and season with salt and fresh ground pepper. Voilá!!! PS. Please refrain from writing all in CAPS. It gives the impression like you're screaming. There are better ways to imply your desperation upon the task of making dinner for your husband. I really wish you a happy marriage. Edit: #3 Make a Caesar salad. That never fails. Good luck : )

i am not sure of the origin, but i do know that the garlic butter and tomato sauce combination is a heavenly food flavor match, so it was natural to combine the butter on bread with red sauce pastas.
