Various theories...
It has often been suggested that without worshippers gods fade from existence.
Some names and customs linger, detached from true worship, such as our days of the week, or the festival named Easter.

Some good stories have been told about fading gods.
Terry Pratchett's "Small Gods" is superb as is, in a very very different vein, Neil Gaiman's "American Gods."

Of course it is possible these gods never existed, in which case it is only the idea that slowly dies, sometimes leaving a pale ghost in a mythology, or a place-name.

(Next question: what about new gods?)

They go to god heaven.....or god hell.....or god purgatory. It all depends as to whether they were a good god or a bad god and if they believed in the jesus of the gods or not.
Unless of course they were atheist gods.In which case they didn't believe in themselves anyway so it doesn't matter

They are no longer worshiped seriously.
