The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress — and enduring style of USO delivery — is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military. The USO currently operates more than 130 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Overseas centers are located in Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Qatar, Korea, Afghanistan, Guam, and Kuwait. Service members and their families visit USO centers more than 5.6 million times each year. There are several USO's located at major airports in the US and overseas airports. They provide a place to rest, catch a flick, or get some refreshments while travelling through.

Uniformed Services Organization was started during WWII. It was similar to what the Red Cross had been doing, providing a place where "away from home" service men and women could sit around with other military people and sing, dance, have a coke, etc.

For a guy who is away from the front on a 3-day pass, a USO was like being back home with friends and family.
