I've wondered about this myself over several years and my conclusion on asking women out is, yes, the guy must ask the woman out because she generally won't do it. I've asked numerous women and most of them admit that they've never or almost never asked a guy out themselves. I think this whole thing is a matter of biology, as can be seen elsewhere in nature e.g. peacocks with their beautiful tails put on a display and the females come along. With humans, the women make the effort to look great (this is why they are the ones always worrying about their weight, their make-up, their shoes, their clothes, their tans, etc. which is not what men are like) and then they stand about waiting for the men to come hunting. Oh, and don't expect them to make your job easy - they often stand in small groups, watching you approach, giggling all the while, and then try to make you look a fool to see how you deal with it.
The trick is to sock it right back to them - with mustard on it i.e. mentally prepare yourself with a few insulting quips aimed where it really hurts e.g. anything about her appearance, and if she gets too smart, fire them off with the merest hint of a twinkle in your eye and keep doing so if necessary as you walk away.

No but women like emotionaly stable guys.
When we first meet a guy, we like a guy who isn't afraid of innitiating most things, like asking to go out. First kiss and buying dinner.

After the two are a couple it's an even playing field.

Well, I guess it depends on what generation you're from. I was a teenager in the late 70's and back then, it was just unheard of for a girl to ask a guy out on a date. But being the mother of an 18 year old girl, Let me tell things sure have changed. From her point of view, she feels like if she is interested in a guy, then she will initiate contact with him first. Talking, flirting, phoning, and asking him out first.

some sad women think men should take the initiative, because of the way society has beaten it into them...

if you like a girl, wink at her and see what she does... :D
