You would have to go to a doctor and receive care. For SS you have to have been under the care of a physician in your case a psychologist for a long period of time and with medication still be considered mentally disabled. For disability you would to have to be under the care for a Dr. for at least three months depending on the state you live in, and be deemed unable to complete functions for the job that you have (if through your job), or completely non-functioning if you aren't working. However you would have had to had a job and paid disability and or SS taxes for a certain length of time depending on the state.
(also you most have a diagnoses)
I am not sure if you meant for it to come out the way it did, but I sounds like you are trying to get out of working and get something for nothing. Go get help the doctor will let you know what you should do next.

the black dog ( depression) can be extremely debilitating and is being recognised as a challenge. Over 30% of western population has suffered from some form of depression to some degree according to Beyond Blue, a self help group for depressives. http://www.beyondblue.org.au/
So you are most definately not alone or different.
Before you can get any assistance you will have to take steps to seek some help, either through a GP in the first instance who can refer you on to a phyciatrist if needed.
Usually with depression there are drugs like prozac or zoloft which are very good in most cases and do not leave you a mess like valium did.If needed they can also use temazipam which will help you to sleep.
I had depression and took zoloft and it really helped me get my life back on track. I have been off it a while now.
One of the things with depression is that there seems no way out, and I think thats where you are right now.
Take it from someone who knows, but there is a way out and a way you can get your life back on track , you have to take the first steps though and want to be helped.
I wish you all the best
Simon

The United States Government? Ha!
Open a phone book, look under psychiatrists, and call every one until you find one who will treat you. You need professional help. You can get better!

You need to be declared disabled and unable to work to qualify for any sort of disability payments. For this, you'll need your doctor (sometimes up to 3 doctors, and sometimes a court-appointed doctor or therapist, too) to examine you and verify that you are beyond medical help and unable to support yourself or function normally enough to hold a job.
