what can i do when my son holds back bowel movements?

Is he constipated? Or has be been constipated? He might be afraid to have a bowel movement if he's been constipated in the past and has had a painful experience. If you think he really needs to go you could try a glycerine suppository or a little sterile warm water in a bulb syringe - that should get things moving.

I went through this for too long before I really pressed my pediatrician to help me do something about it. My son was holding back his bowel movements, then when he would go, he would pass these god-awful bricks that would make him turn red in the face and cry. I cried too! I finally made my doctor put him on Miralax and he's been able to go regularly.

Raisins, raisins & then some prune juice.

Let him wear a diaper to go so that he doesn't get constipated.

Or sit with him in the washroom and read him stories and sing songs.

At a certain time each day, have him sit on the toilet or potty chair, give him a book or two, read to him, sing, whatever, but he has to stay until he goes poop.

give him a suppository to ease the pain and it will just come out and next time he wonthold it back cuz he prolly doesnt want another suppository.
also if he doesnt poop it can get hard and cause problems

If he's doing it on purpose, then reward him when he does go. If it's constapation, then you need to talk to his doc. And you can only hold them for so long before you can't anymore, so he should be fine.
