I think a good start would be one of the Romance languages you mention, French, Spanish or Italian, because they are closely related and learning one is helpful if you decided you might want to learn another. French is a good one for English speakers, since there are many points of similarity.
German I found rather tough, but it has its beauty, as well, and is very helpful when one is travelling in Europe.
I don't know Russian, so I can't help you there with any sense of how difficult it may be, but learning it will give you an entree into all of the other Slavic languages.
I don't know, now that I read the above, I've been much help. Let me just plump for French and call that my conclusion.

French is a lot harder than some people think...it has some many tenses, irregularities and silly little rules, plus it's difficult to pronounce, and the French have a habit of saying everything as fast as possible, which coupled with the fact that many words sound the same, makes it very difficult to understand when spoken.
Spanish is easier but somewhat easier...I haven't studied it properly so can't say much.
German is a lot easier and a really beautiful language, if you don't mind getting your head around the grammar. The Germans, unlike the French, take the effort to form their words properly so it's easy to understand when spoken and doesn't have too many irregularities. Personally I love the sound and look of the language so would recommend that highly.

Go for Spanish!!! The easiest languages to learn among the mentioned above. You will get great experience and practice since almost every second person u meet in USA is Hispanic , and u'll find instructions in Spanish next to English everywhere u go. If u master Spanish u'll pick up Italian in no time. It'll be great use of Spanish if u 're work in a retail or if u have to travel for business or pleasure. Russian would be the hardest . Hope u take my advise into consideration , Good Luck!!!

I agree with the post suggesting that the romance languages (french, italian, spanish) are a good place to start.
I've taken both French and Spanish, and I thought they both had their points. With French, you just have to learn the sounds, which may or may not be spelled in the way that you expect... Spanish is a phonetic language which makes it easier to sound and spell things out. French only has a few subjunctive forms... Spanish has many more...
Perhaps you should pick a language based on your physical location?

So far the only languages that I have studied are French and Japanese. Neither of which where near as difficult as I would have expected. Although, I would say Japanese is easier than French. Shocking!

I found spanish to be very easy because there are so many similar words in english....it's all in the pronunciation. If you live in the US, spanish could be very useful.
