Her great Aunt's friend from the concentration camp is the one she takes the place of in the dream/flashback.

And, she tries to warn them what the nazis really want but they don't listen to her, they don't believe her because it's unbelievable until they find themselves in it. Would you believe someone who told you that if you go with official looking people that you, your friends, and your family will die horribly? No, you'd think they were crazy or suffering from sun stroke. She wasn't able to run for much of the same reason.

As for why it starts where it does, good stories start as late as they possibly can for you to still be able to unerstand the story. This way, the writer does not get bogged down with unneccessary details and distractions in the story. Writing a story is a process and the story evolves from a very simple idea. However, not everything about the story is contained in the idea by itself. So, the writer continues building the story until they are satisfied with it. Then the real work begins because they have to edit what they have and put everything together in a story. If every story started at the beginning of the character's life, no one would read because the stories would be too long.

I hope this helps.

Judging by how your question was written, perhaps you should read something more tuned to your level.

Like "The Cat In the Hat".
