I ask myself the same thing since here (Germany) the drinking age is 16 (18 for hard liquor) But the draw backs are higher suicide rates and more drunk driving. I just feel bad for the soldiers who come over at 18 on a 2 year tour and can drink all they want PCS to the states and get a MUI for drinking when they are 20.

When I was in the military in the 80's you could. They had enlisted clubs on base and a Class 6 liquor store. Most of those under 21 and some over abused the priviledge. DUI's , death, wife beatings, battery charges, you name it it happened. No wonder the military changed the rules.

Tis but a matter of current legislation.. nothing more.. Back when i was enlisted, If you could take a bullet, you could drink.. Its simply changed legally since then.. thats all.. (**** I was way under 17.. thats changed too)

same as age of consent has changed for sex.. (its gone up not down in most states) its just the present LAW... and thats that..

it wasnt always this way.. but thats the way it is now...

This is actually a good question. You're old enough to sit in a fox hole and in battle kill your fellow human beings. But when that battle is over and you want a beer, you're not old enough to handle the responsibility of alcohol? HUH!?!??! It doesn't make any sense to me either. But the rule is there for a reason. I just don't know what it is.

Because the law for legal drinking in most states, is twenty one. By the time your four year enlistment is up, you will be legal to drink in the US. Life's just not fair!

when you turn 21 you'll understand why kids 20 years old and younger shouldn't be allowed to drink alcohol.
