It's the first stage of the compressor system spinning. The spiral is not on all jets but likely to just let you know it is still spinning. It's just painted on. You can only see the spiral clearly when it is running slow. As the engine is almost stopped it would make little or no sound so a mechanic might not realize the blade is still running.

It is not necessary to know which direction because compressor blades are only capable of spinning in a single direction. Jet engines don't run in reverse. If you want a plane to go backwards you use thrust reversers, which re-direct the thrust itself.

Yes, it's just painted on. A spiral has the advantage that even if the blades are spinning quite fast, you can still see expanding circles. If they just painted say spokes, they would appear as a blur at speed and someone may not realise that it is moving.

I believe the answers above are correct, but the swirl also gives an indication of which way the blades are spinning. If the blades rotate above a certain speed, the human eye can't tell which way they are rotating.
