Mental disorders can cause this, such as depression. It wouldn't hurt if the family went to counseling with him to help determine if this is the main factor. Especially since you said he didn't want to shower. At this age, it seems like it would be more than just laziness, but that he has no motivation whatsoever. And it depression isn't the reason, then he needs something to really motivate and change his life.

He is too old for a lot of resources that helps in the earlier years, but there is this one organization that I'm familiar with that seems to be pretty awesome in helping teens and young men (20+) get their lives back together and on the right track. It's called Teen Challenge and it is a Christian faith-based program founded by David Wilkerson ("The Cross & The Switchblade"). There are several centers located around the U.S., and if your family can get him approved, he can be sent to one of these and maybe it will really help. A lot of the men that enter the centers is trying to get away from addiction problems, but I'm not sure if that is a requirement. Anyway, if you want more information, just click on this link & good luck to him.

Sounds similar to how my brother is. At that age, there is definetly hope, he just has to sortof help his own self find it. I'm sure you've heard the expression, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". Well yeah, thats pretty much true. You can always strap the horse down and inject him with mind altering drugs or perform some sort of hypnosis on him, but I don't recommend that. I would say he definetly he himself has to take a dramatic step in the right direction before anything is going to get better. But yes, there is most definetly still hope.

This could be what is often called Conduct Disorder in the mental health field. He may also be suffering from a depressive disorder, but I wouldn't be able to say definitively based on that information. Individual therapy should be an option for him. Call the insurance provider and find out the level of care for which he qualifies, and at what locations in your area he is covered. Then give it a try.

He could be suffering from ADD, (attention deficit disorder) I had this problem with my youngest son and got him help. Now, at 27, he is married with a family and very stable. If he is diagnosed with this, it really isn't his fault. It's a chemical imbalance and affects the brain. He needs intervention by mom and dad. Let him know you care without being angry or mean about it. Try to understand there is a root cause and there is help for him.

Sounds like he is a GREAT candidate for the army or marines...they will straighten em out and give them something to work for...but its actually a pretty simple lifestyle but they instill discipline...give it a try!!! I'm not a recruiter but i am in the military and it sounds like he has a mind of his own just needs some harsher pressure to get him straightened out!

Get him into the military! They'll shape him up or he'll find himself in REAL trouble.
