they say depression is sometimes anger turned inward. Can you find a way to channel the anger outward? Martial arts, physical activities???

first of all....I am sorry. Depression really bites. But I admire that you are wanting to know what 'causes' it rather than to just 'live' with it.
The first time I was diagnosed with depression and was told by doc I would be on antidepressants for the rest of my life. They NEVER gave me a good reason why I had it. No family history...etc. After a few years of being on drugs I started researching alternative means at an herb store (I was a skeptic of herbs at this point but willing to try anything). They did some tests on me and I had 8 severe vitamin deficiences. After I took those supplements I no longer needed the herbal antidepressant I was on! WOOHOO!!
The second time I was diagnosed with depression (three weeks ago) it felt different. It was only in the mornings and it was SEVERE. So severe that I was suicidal (something I NEVER had the first time). Husband and I figured out it was being caused by heart med. Didn't take it that night....was fine the next day!!!!!!!!
I share these examples so you can see it can be caused by different things...some may have it because of family history, medicine side effect, vitamin deficiences.... just be your own advocate and do in your heart what you know to be true. I also had a friend who had it from not enough B12....did th injections and was later was fine. Just because a doctor tells you something....look into it. Don't just take the drugs because they say to. SOME depression can be cured...if not all. You just have to look and hunt for answers. There is a reason it's called a medical 'practice'. They are practicing on you!

Factors that contribute to depression include:
Heredity. Researchers have identified several genes that may be involved in bipolar disorder, and they're looking for genes linked to other types of depression. But not everyone with a family history of depression develops the disorder, and conversely, people with no family history of the disorder can become depressed.
Stress. Stressful life events, particularly a loss or threatened loss of a loved one or a job, can trigger depression.
Medications. Long-term use of certain medications, such as some drugs used to control high blood pressure, sleeping pills or, occasionally, birth control pills, may cause symptoms of depression in some people.
Illnesses. Having a chronic illness, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer or Alzheimer's disease, puts you at higher risk of developing depression. Having an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), even mildly, also can cause depression.
Personality. Certain personality traits, such as having low self-esteem and being overly dependent, self-critical, pessimistic and easily overwhelmed by stress, can make you more vulnerable to depression.
Hormones. Women experience depression about twice as much as men, which leads researchers to believe hormonal factors may play a role in the development of depression.
Alcohol, nicotine and drug abuse. Experts once thought that people with depression used alcohol, nicotine and mood-altering drugs as a way to ease depression. But using these substances may actually contribute to depression and anxiety disorders.

There's a difference between being "in" a depression, such as someone close to you has passed away and you're sad, ect. and "having" depression. There are no causes to being clinically depressed. It's a chemical imbalance in your brain. Take medicine, and you should be fine.
