If you feel a migraine coming on (this period is known as the prodrome), see if you can get a prescription for one of the following:
Sumatriptan (Imitrex)
Rizatriptan (Maxalt)
Almotriptan (Axert)
Eletriptan (Relpax)
Frovatriptan (Frova)
Naratriptan (Amerge)
Zolmitriptan (Zomig)
Only take one of these if you feel a migraine coming. They have no use during a migraine attack.
If you are in the middle of a migraine attack, beginning, an analgesic (ranked in order from weakest to strongest) would be Tramadol (Ultram), Darvocet (Dextropropoxyphine), Fiorinal or Fioricet with or without codeine, Vicoden/Vicoprofen. It is highly unlikely you can get any strong medications without a very, very good reason.
An ice pack may work temporarily, and so can lying down in a completely dark room with as little noise as possible.
As a migraine sufferer for twenty years, my neurologist admits I have tried every medication I just named. If one doesn't work after a month of migraine attacks, try another. Get a CAT scan or MRI to determine a further diagnosis, and talk to your neurologist about possible food or work related triggers.
I hope this helps you!

If you do not want to take perscription pills for migraines you could try Excedrin Migraine. This is the only type of OTC medicine that has ever worked for my migraines. It has a pain killer and a bit of caffeine. Just a hint of caution though, if your migraine is already full-force, it may not work. I try to take it the second I have any of the symptoms. One relief tip is to try peppermint. Peppermint pressure point cream, peppermint oil, or pretty much anything with peppermint will help a migraine. It depends on where you get your migraines. Mine are often above my eyes and so I like to rub it in right below my eyebrows. The massaging makes the pressure lighter. I also massage my temples, the back of my neck just below my hairline, and my forehead. My friend is Iranian and she swears by this old custom: take a long, thin piece of cloth and wrap it snugly around your head. I usually only do this when I am in dire pain, but somehow--i dont know how--it does help to relieve pain and pressure. But definitely try the peppermint because it really does help.

Ice packs...besides taking medication use ice packs. There are many migraine medications, injectables and some that orally melt in your mouth to relieve the pain faster. But in the dreaded meantime ice packs help alot. Make sure you try keeping fluids down, if you throw up during an attack it is still important to drink your fluids... water or gatorade... no sodas or coffee. Really just rest, ice packs and take your medication as soon as you feel one coming on.
