The Holy Bible is the Word of God. God speaks to me giving me more understanding, knowledge, wisdom in His Word; if I ask.
If I pray for Israel or persecuted Christian, God answers my prayers, usually already written in His Word, regarding them.
Also, for victory in someone elses life, God answers those and the answers are yes & amen. I prayed for favor for my daughter in getting work, and God provided favor. But it is written in the Word that we, who are born of God, have favor.
Something that isn't directly in the Bible, could be in a book, where someone else has victory because of what is in the bible. Once the Lord told my to purchase "Your Best Life Now." by http://www.joelolsteen.com I have & read it and it is a great victory book.
Also the Lord told me to read some of the prophetic words of http://www.KimClement.com and I got answers to prayers, plus he had a vision yrs before 9/11 (I found that out because the Lord had me buy the Prophets magazine and the article was in there; & no one seemed to care or realize what it meant. So also another Pastor I kow had a vision a week before it happened, but didn't understand what it meant either.
Also, God wants me to not go a certain direction on the road sometimes, to go another way, and I obey. Don't want to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Also after reading the above answer, God does tug on the physical heart. If I am doubting God, or argueing with God to a certain degree, I can have heart pain, where I submit to God and let God make my heart feel better. If I accidently stumble in a preoccupied area, I get strong heart palpitations, where I need to slow down, and ask God where I am wrong, or I just need to shut up or something. Also, touches my heart in many ways. A heart tap or tug means pay attention to God.

Experience! Is the number one teacher.
Just look at all of the disciples of the New Testament. Through the experience were they able to write it. It just did not happen over night as some would have you believe. Not that it is not impossible.
You cannot not write about something without first experiencing it.
(Well, some write about things that they themselves have never experienced). (So on that note, "Just how accurate would it be?")
If through your reading and asking and not leaning onto your own understanding of how you think it should be approached, the accuracy should be pretty much right on.
But unless the reader has first experienced it, it makes no sense.
Example:
One cannot fully understand suffering, until one has first hand experience in suffering.
Of course, there will be those who by Logic and Rational Intelligence, will tell you otherwise. Hence, leaning unto their own understanding. Instead of God's viewpoint of the subject.

In order for me to answer the question, I must point out that I am a Christian and I am spirit filled. For those of you that want to bash me or tell me you are an atheist and there is no God, I ask that you be gentle. I want to answer this question honestly, from my beliefs and experience, not to give non-believers an opportunity to beat up on Christians. This person deserves and honest answer. Having droned on about that:
Because I am spirit-filled and read the Bible frequently, my heart is in a gentle place for God to speak to me and deal with me. When I am doing something displeasing to Him, I get a very strong tug in my heart that causes me to slow down and examine what I am doing or saying - am I doing or saying it in response to some natural situations and conversation or am I doing or saying what glorifies God and spreads His unconditional love?
Since I search my heart honestly (God sees it and my motives anyway) I may or may not change the behavior based on the situation.
I have also "heard" Him speak to me in my thoughts, which when coupled with my heart tell me it is God and not Satan.
The third way is when I am struggling with something and it seems like everywhere I turn I am hearing God's gentle correction through music, my church teachings, radio teachings, comments from my friends, things I read on Yahoo! Answers, movies, or any other thing in the natural. God uses whatever is at hand in my life to get my attention.
When I have overcome a struggle or I have loved on one of God's children (everyone is a child of God, believers and non-believers alike) in a way that pleases Him, I feel the joy of His blessing on me. There is no other joy such as that anywhere on earth!
If you are seeking new ways to look for God speaking to you, I hope this helps.
May all of you be blessed in whatever you believe and wherever your paths take you.
NOTE to Fireball: It is a blessing to see that you have stayed strong and waited on Him to answer your prayer. I pray that you won't have to wait much longer and that His answer will bless you in ways you never imagined! Amen!

That is something that is between God and the individual...what is communicated is usually of a personal nature and not for general broadcast... I am not making light of your question, that is just the way it is... The relationship of God to his people is non-on-one and personal... how he has communicated to me is not how he will communicate to another.... simply... he can communicate through inspiration by giving you thought he wants you to have. or by providing examples in the actions of others... and... he can actually audibly speak to individuals at times...this happens more than is reported as addable communication is usually of the most personal... I can tell you that when God dose genuanly speak to an individual it is not something that can be misunderstood... and who is doing the talking is not in doubt...

Some here are unwilling to accept the fact that God can speak - literally - to whomever He wishes. Whatever their reasoning it does not diminish this reality.

Through all of the things He does.
Mostly through strong feelings, almost like urges.
