I have won a prize, which consists of a flight. I'm pretty sure the airline will be Virgin, for whom I have a frequent flier card. Am I able to ask them at check in to put the miles for the flight onto my card, even though I haven't paid for it? Cheeky I know but you gotta try these things. Aslo if anyone has any tips or advice on upgetting an upgrade I would be grateful. I'm flying to LA on a Friday morning.

Thanks!

Since you did not pay for it, the ticket might have it's own restrictions, and some of those can include not awarding miles. Where ever you won this, realize they might have given you an award ticket. That means, the flight you are taking was something they were given, and sometimes companies will give them away as incentive to employees, or in a contest form somehow.

But, I think your idea of at least asking AT the ticket counter would be a fair idea.

Tips for possible upgrade...

Dress very well. Shirt, tie and jacket for men, nice dress or business attire for a woman. Airlines will NOT give FREE upgrades to anyone in jeans, or unprofessional clothing... EVER!

Be as nice to the ticket and gate agents as possible. When you arrive at the Gate (the decisions are in their hands), introduce yourself at the counter and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade, that you are traveling alone and would really appreciate one if available.

This is the tough part. If you are nice and sweet, sometimes you will get it. If you have ANY attitude whatsoever, the gate agent will most likely refuse you, even if there were 20 seats in first class available.

Last thing to remember, international flights are very difficult to get FREE upgrades. You have far too many non-revenue (employees or people using airline travel benefits) flying. Those passengers are sometimes the MOST informed about the entire process and will get a first class seat before you!

Remember a lot of airlines will offer last minute PAID upgrades. It is worth looking into. You could call Virgin and ask what the cost might be to upgrade on that flight. Sometimes it is as low as $50, sometimes a couple hundred dollars.

Good luck!

Give them your frequent flyer number at checkin. They will add it to your itinerary, no problem. If you get miles or not is a toss up. If you won the flight from someone other than Virgin, though, they very well may have bought the flight on a fare class that earns miles - and they very well might not have. Doesn't hurt to add your FF account either way - since the worst that happens is that the miles won't post.

The odds are that if you won the ticket as a prize it is probably not a ticket that you can either accure miles on, or redeem miles on. Ussualy those are considered bulk tickets, or gift tickets that would not have the same types of frequent flyer perks as other tickets.

Try to find out what the fare type is, then you can go the Virgin atlantic website and see if you can redeem miles on it.

My gut would tell me no...

Unfortunately, Continental miles can't be used to upgrade on KLM or Northwest. However, if you purchased the ticket through Continental (but on KLM or Northwest as a codeshare) and specified you'd like to upgrade at the time of booking, this is allowed.
