Highyway 15 from the border is mostly 4 lane toll road to Tepic. Turn right towards the coast at Tepic and take highway 200 to Vallarta.

2 and a half days without driving nights, have Mexico insurance, import your car at KM21 ... and have a good time.

Wow... the drive looks LOOONG... If you go to mapquest, you can look up a map of Puerto Vallarta, but it won't give you directions. Zoom out a few times and you'll be able to see AZ on the map.

You might want to think about taking an airplane instead. Driving through that much of Mexico probably isn't safe, especially with American lisence plates. Check out travelzoo.com for specials on fares to Mexico. They always seem to know where all the great deals are.

Good luck!

That’s a great drive. I just did it a couple of weeks ago. Stick to the toll roads. You should be able to make it to Mazatlan the first night and easily to Puerto Vallarta before dark the second night. There are no toll roads after Tepic, but it’s a beautiful drive.

Go to Nogales and take the toll road, you won´t miss it.
You can rest at Culiacan or Mazatlan.
The tool road ends an hour after Mazatlan and starts again half an hour before Tepic.
After Tepic, follow the directions to Pto. Vallarta (West, to the coast). Enjoy it!

Mexico is a beautiful country to drive but I wouldn't recommend driving but if you do drive days and stay in hotels during the night, drive trough toll freeways it is safer. Two things to compare ,gas prices, toll freeways ( expensive)unsafe roads if you get lost. Flights are shipper and it won't take more then 4 hours to arrive comparing to 30 hrs. or more drive, even if you rent a car in PV.
