Someone told me that they now require an actual HS Diploma and that a GED was no longer good enough. I am a veteran, and my 16 yo son is interested in the military.

The answer to this is both yes and no.

The armed services are allowed to accept no more than 10% of enlisted servicemembers who only have a GED. Each branch has stricter criteria - for example the Army (IIRC) will allow a maximum of 5%.

Also remember that with a GED you have to get a higher ASVAB score in order to qualify and you do not qualify for the better bonuses and jobs.

BTW - contrary to the claims of the liberals, the military will rather be shorthanded than drop the standards enough to get 'problem soldiers.'

It depends on the branch and the current manning situation. Right now the Air Force is over-manned, so they are trying to reduce the force and might not accept someone with a GED. However the Army is under manned and more than likely will accept GED's. Your best bet is to talk to a recruiter or visit the branches recruiting Web site for requirements.

The US Army is currently allowing applicants who score over 31 on the ASVAB to enlist with a GED.

The other services, IF allowing GEDs, require a minimum of a 50 on the ASVAB if you were to enlist with a GED.

Yes the U.S. Military still accepts GED as proper credentials for
enlistment. My son only has a GED and is in the ARMY now.
We are at WAR the military needs all the able bodies it can get.
It's not fair that they don't get any sign bonus though.

yes they do. it does affect qualifications for enlistment bonuses though. make sure you read the find print. i know the army lists their qualifications on their website www.goarmy.com and i am sure the other branches would too. the marines and air force require that if you graduated with a GED that you have at least 15 hrs. of college credits. decide which branch your son wants to serve and then just ask the recruiter they will be more than happy to help you.

I have a friend who enlisted in the Marines 5 years ago with a GED. Could have changed since then, but I doubt it.

Yes, in fact they will accept a non GED recruit and get the recruit a GED during training.

You should be very proud of your son for wanting to serve his country during a time of war, and thank you for your service. We need more people like you and your son

Each branch has its own criteria. GEDs are generally acceptable for enlistment. Contact a recruiter to be sure.
