We have the durapella suede stuff, and so far it has been durable and easy to clean. Whatever you do....DON'T GET LEATHER!

I'd stay away from leather, even if the front claws have been removed. The back claws will still gouge the material.
My cat really likes the suede leather fabric we have on our Lane sectionals. She never tries to claw at it, and her claws don't mark it.
If you have a sofa that the cat keeps getting on, cover the parts she likes to get on with tin foil. Cats simply LOATHE the feeling it gives them on their paws, and they will get down quickly. After a few weeks, most cats will no longer even try, and you can remove the tin foil.
You can also put double sided tape on the fabric if it isn't leather. The stickiness will make the cat batty.
It sounds silly, but I've known two people that have successfully gotten the cats off a certain sofa that way.

Cloth and cheap!Cats like to nit and will nit the **** out of it.Take it from one who knows. My girlfriend is a vet tech and we have adoted about 10 cats and have been foster parents to about 50 untill they found homes. We spent about $3000 on a sectional and had it shredded. And do you no what happens when you yell and scream and stomp your feet when they are doing it?They stop and look at you like you are crazy, then they get back to shredding. Then come over and want lovings when they are done like nothing happened. And all of those people who think that their little anti nitting tricks are working, well check your furniture, evry inch cause it does'nt matter what you do they are just being sneaky and getting smart about it.we have had up 4 scratching post some homemade with carpet and they love them but still nit on the sectional. And we have tried every trick in the book. And dont fool yourself, you dont really train them they train us.You think you are the king of your castle,or queen, yeah right, you go on thinking that. It's what they let us think so we keep on putting the food out. When it comes right down to it though they will let you know whoz castle it really is,theirs.they just allow us to pretend so as not to embarrass us in front of friends and family!Gotta love'em,cause they sure do have a lot of love to give back,in spite of all the pain in the butt things they do.Actually my best advice is to get what you want and know the cat or cats are gonna do just what they want to it no matter what.Dont let it drive you nuts like it did me the first year, when you catch them doing it pick them up and love on them and that will distract them for the time being.Besides, sometimes if they want your attention, any attention even negative is better than none so if they can't get your attention one way nitting on the sofa is gonna do it.Hope my book long babbling helped some.I know what you are thinking, how can being told that it's hopeless to stop them gonna help, well maybe it will help a little to know you are not alone.

Martha Stewart says she does not declaw her cats, just clips their claws with cat nail clippers like at wal-mart (also if careful can use human fingernail clippers), and has a scratching post, in the day she says she covers her furniture with sheets, i've tried it, it works they don't scratch with the sheets, can't
also if see trying to do instead of post, make sure high enough post (Martha Stewart made her own, check her site, used a large tree branch attached to base, one time she covered long pole with carpet, attached to base, can usually make cheaper and better on ur own), also try a squirt gun (water gun) or sprayer set to stream water, and squirt them if you see doing anything thing bad, but then try to hide water bottle, read u don't want them fearing you, thinking you going to squirt all the time, squirt then hide the bottle and whistle and hum, and act like you don't know where it came from lol

Train the cats not to claw at the furniture, keep there claws trimmed and be sure they have a scratching post. Also make sure they have plenty of toys to play with and that they get time to play and if they are seen scratching at furniture, that they get shown to use the scratching post!

Anything but leather or vinyl if they still have any of their claws. Leather and vinyl will get lots of holes in it. So, if it feels comfortable to you, then you can bet, your cat will love it too. They dont care about fabric really. If you sit on the couch, they will sit there too cause of your scent.
I have 2 cats that I have to fight w/ just for ME to be able to sit on the couch.

You mean cats that are NOT de-clawed? Is there ANY "best" upholstery? I guess I'd like to know, too!

We have couches on the main floor and they are ruined! But in out basement she never scratched the leather couches. And before we bought them we kinda took a risk because all of my friends leather couches are ruined as well. But our is good as new. But then ur kitty might find it interesting to see how it feels on her claws. So i wouldnt exactly suggest it.
Hope I helped!

Train the cat not to scratch the furniture. Then you can have whatever you want.
