You thank him for showing you who he really is and what is true colors are. You hold your head up and move on because you've not done anything wrong. He's not devasted your life at all, he's actually done you a really big favor. He's shown you that he's not a real man and that without words you're better off without him. Count your blessing that you no longer have to deal with the reject and that he's going to be someone else's problem. Be grateful. Don't even ask or worry about who John is with. Most guys take the cowards way out and just starting avoiding you. Although the best way to break up would have been with a face to face conversation, you at least have been informed by him personally that he wants to break up. I'd take him at his word and not try to reconcile. He'll probably be expecting you to get in touch to talk things through. Instead, go out and have fun. You'll meet someone else soon enough. And when you do hear from him eventually let him know that you appreciated him making the first move as you had been wanting to break things off as well. He'll be stunned. Try to have fun with it instead of being devastated. He was too intimidated to convey this face to face.
