I was thinking of a dark red but I am a little scared because my cabinets are going to be a darker brown, and I am afraid I will make it to dark. Another concern is that the kitchen and living room are very open. I will have to paint them both the same color and that is not to much of a problem but the living room is open two storys and that means that I will have to paint the upstairs the same color also.

you don't have to paint all walls the same color. Use color as an expression of yourself. Try doing the back splash above your counters to the bottom of your cabinets. Use a striped wall paper above the cabinets if there is room, line them with greenery and put your own touch in it. I did this one house where the kitchen and living room were attached and I did bold colors [the rooms were BIG] so it brought an inviting feel yet saucy and sexy I lined above the cabinets with grapes and greenery with an occational wine bottle, behind it I put a plaid paper with green/purple, toupe and beige and painted the bottom grape and the counters were done in amethysist granit with cherry wood cabinets! and stainless steel/black appliances ! It was stunning! Go for what ever makes you feel happy! good luck!

I think the kitchen would be great in a primrose yellow and then the living room a kind of muted cream/yellow so it blends. Its a really uplifting color!
