Do you find that when you constantly help your children financially, it undermines their ability to be self reliant?

Yes, yes, yes. A little help is loving and supportive. Too much help may create a monster. My old college roommate used to have $300 phone bills she couldn't pay and max out her cr cards all the time. As soon as her parents sent her a check, she'd just go spend more....until one day they told her "It's happened too many times..." She finally (years later) has paid off that old debt and has learned to spend at least a little more within her limits.

Yep, happened to my sister. She's just going to be 30 and is just recently learning how to handle her money (and still fighting debt from credit cards ect) my parents tried to "help" her a lot when she was younger, but she never learned the value of the $ and got in debt again. My mom has said recently she wishes she didn't help her out so much and maybe she would have learned sooner.

Yes I am 20 years old and my parents basically cut me off at 18. They helped me when it was extremely necessary, like i had mono and was off work so they paid my bills while i was sick and stuff like that. But my old roommates worked and made money just to have..their parents paid all their bills and rent and everything. They made around $300 a pay check which was about every 2 weeks and they spent it all on beer and drugs. But on my behalf I never got involved because I knew I couldnt just waste my money because i had bills to pay..which i hated at first but now I know it really helped me out..plus kept me clean!

How old are you children? I just started an account for my 13 yr. old daughter that is just for her to manage. She gets her allowance and babysitting money. So when she goes to the movies etc. if she has the money in her account to pay for it then she can go, if not then too bad. It saves me a lot of money and in the process teaches her a valuable lesson.
Good luck.

Well.
You should make them be on their own till it comes down to a have to. Not till its too late, but just a have to, then help.
Help with food and such, but find a way to pay for rent.
But, its your choice, because its your child.
You shouldn't let anyone else "raise" your kids.

I DONT REALLY THINK YOU CAN TELL THEM NO IF THEY ARE ASKING FOR MONEY TO PAY BILLS THEN YOU TAKE THE MONEY IN AND PAY IT OR IF ITS FOR FOOD GIVE THEM YOU FOOD IN THE HOUSE OR EVEN GAS THEN YOU GO WITH THEM TO GET THE GAS JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE PAYING FOR WHAT THEY ASKED YOU FOR MONEY FOR THATS WHAT I WOULD DO BUT IF ITS A EERY DAY WEEK OR MONTH KINDA THING THEN I WOULD SIT DOWN WITH THEM ANS GO OVER THERE PAY CHECK AND BILLS WITH THEM SO THE THEY NO HOW MUCH THEY HAVE TO SPEND ON FOOD GAS AND WHAT NOTS GOOD LUCK

yes, my sis was always borrowing money growing up, and when her MIL died they inherited almost a half million dollars and they spent it all and now have a mortgage (90,000) on their house that was paid off by her MIL's estate.
