Start you computer up normally without the mouse plugged in. Then after the computer has booted up plug the mouse in and see if windows XP recognizes it. If so then it should automatically give you the software needed for it.
Maybe that will help...

Check to see that you haven't plugged the moust ps/2 port into the keyboard ps/2 port.
