should people on government programs such as welfare, food stamps, housing and so on be required, if able, to pay back these programs. either with cash after they get a job and i mean a minimal amount as not to keep them from becoming self sufficient or with labor like habitat for humanity does with their 400 hours of sweat equity. otherwise we are helping these folks to become dependant on others. can we pursue this in washington. seems like a good idea. what do you think?

for natasha. i agree to some extent but so everybody knows where i am coming from. i have been around alot of these people most of my life and have seen first hand the abuses. two for instances. a high school "friend" who lived off of the government but drove a $40,000.00 dollar vehicle and another is a family in my local paper who is a third generation supportee. grandmother, mother and two daughters. 40 plus years on government support. i know this may be the exception not the rule.

I think you pose a GREAT question and yes I think that they should. I also think that you should be forced to seek employment while collecting ANY government assistance, sort of like when you are on unemployment. I also think you should not be allowed to have more children while on assistance and if you do, you forfeit what you currently collect. Don't get me wrong, I think that people can fall on hard times and need the assistance but there are those that make a living off of it and I think this should be unacceptable and should be limited to the amount of time that you can collect-- like unemployment. I think the assistance should go to people who have worked all of their life, retired and just aren't able to make it on social security.

I agree with this statement. People who are on welfare should do something to pay the government back. There is many things that they can do. Plant gardens, plant flowers, keep their place clean, watch out for others children. Plus I think that the more children you have the less money you should be able to receive.

I believe there are a couple points that one should understand when trying to answer this question:
1st - There are a lot of myths about welfare users that one should look into so they don't have a bad perception of them. The majority of welfare users use the system for only a short period of time.
2nd - Most people who need to use welfare for a longer period of time cannot get jobs because the system keeps them in a place where they cannot afford to do so. For example, while one is on welfare they may not have to worry about paying for food and bills because welfare pays for it so they can get a somewhat decent job and use their wages to pay for daycare. When they start making too much money welfare takes them off the system and now they have to pay daycare, bills, and food which is too many bills for what they are getting paid. It's a horrible cycle. So why add another bill to them, pay off your welfare? And please consider, If one is making minimum wage they still live below the poverty live. And many people in poverty cannot afford higher education. Until we equalize our world and make an effort to put people in a more equal socioeconomic situation there will always be a need for government assistance. It is truely not their fault for needing the system in most cases (please read more on welfare myths to understand this and on institutional oppression) so why make them pay it back?
3rd - Wouldn't you rather have your tax money going to help people instead of hurt people (war) or to fatten the paychecks of government officials?

I think that some people really know how to play the system. Unfortunately this makes it hard for those who really do need the help. And yes definitely they should have to be actively looking for work while they are on aid, and be able to prove it!

It's not a bad system we have, just poorly run.

yes and no it depends on the sitution really but yes i think it would be a good idea unless the persons are too poor to payback. if poeople are on welfare they must have a good damn reason and we should not punish them if they are having trouble they need help and that whta welfare is for.
