"Because asthma can mimic other feline diseases (bronchitis, heart disease, pneumonia), a veterinary diagnosis assisted by an xray is essential. In many ways, feline asthma is very similar to human asthma, although our understanding of the causes of clinical feline asthma has been growing in recent years."

I would see your vet to make sure that it is asthma, and go from there, best of luck, God Bless.

my cat has been diagnosed with asthma a long time ago. I noticed she was having breathing problems at times. I do not think asthma is contagious as it is usually allergy based. It is not like a cold that can be passed on. Vet diagnosed asthma. Nothing I can do just take care of her the best I can. She does get wheezing spells.

You cannot catch asthma from someone else but both the person and the cat can have their asthma triggered by somethingin their environment at the same time. Here is the information on asthma in cats.

What is Feline Asthma?

Asthma is a serious long-term disease of cats' lower airways. The signs commonly associated with condition range from laboured breathing to a chronic cough. Occasional paroxysms of severe coughing are seen with the cat holding its neck extended. The signs can be seasonal in some but not all cats, and are exacerbated by smoke, sprays, dusts and scents. The suggested cause of this condition is thought to be an allergy, but often it proves impossible to identify the specific agent or agents to allow hyposensitisation to be undertaken.

Diagnosis of Feline Asthma

Signs can be variable from a subtle change in breathing through to a life-threatening marked abdominal heaving with accompanying cyanosis as the affected cat battles to inhale enough air. Where the cat has had a severe problem over an extended period of time weight loss and generalised debilitation may be seen.

Radiography of the chest will show signs of airway thickening and sometimes over-inflation of the lungs.

Samples taken from the airways will reveal a build up of mucus and inflammatory cells in particular eosinophils.

Treatment of Feline Asthma

In the severe acute form of this disease aggressive treatment with oxygen, bronchodilators (to open the airways) and steroids are required to reverse the life-threatening airway narrowing and inflammation.

Asthma isn't a contagious disease. Cats do get asthma, but it's not something they catch. If your cat is wheezing, you should take him/her into the vet for an exam and to listen to her lungs. They might want to take an x-ray to see the lungs and trachea. Heartworm infection in cats can cause asthma-like symptoms.

Yes cats can get asthma, but they don't 'catch it' from a human or another cat. My cat has asthma and requires an inhaler twice daily (tons o' fun, lemme tell ya). The vet says chances are the cat has developed an allergy to something, but it's near impossible to figure out what, so all we can do is treat the symptoms. Have a vet check out your kitty's lungs to see if treatment is necessary.

I don't know that they can get it just because someone else in the house has it, but most cases of asthma are enviromentally caused so if the cat is in the same environment as people who have asthma then it is most definetly possible.

Is asthma really contagious to other people? If not, then I wouldn't think the cat could get it from the person, either. That's my guess.

But if she's wheezing, why not take her to the vet to have her checked?

Cats can get asthma, but not from someone in the house, or even another cat. You should have an xray taken to confirm thats whats going on and not pnuemonia, brochitis or heart disease.
