when he is standing. he just starts breathing really hard and it's like he's gasping for air. I haven't noticed anything similar about any of the situations and i don't know what he does to start doing it.

I think my dog might be doing the same thing...I've heard that it's kinda like an internal, inversed sneeze...my dog will do it a couple times and then she's totally fine....my vet said nothing to worry about, it's normal. Ask your vet to be sure though! It's probably nothing, but better to be on the safe and cautious side.

One of our dogs did that except that it was like she was wheezing on the in-breath. We never did figure it out. She never did it when a vet was around and they checked her throat and stuff, but didn't find anything unusual. If a vet can hear it, then they might be able to figure it out, but otherwise they could check his throat and lungs. Ours never did it at any particular situation either.

Have you ever heard a reverse sneeze? Kind of sounds like a backward snort, could that be it? You didnt say what kind of dog or how old he is, some smushed face breeds have a longer soft palate that will cause them to snort too.

I agree with CS...my Chihuahuas does it all the time. Reverse sneezing-a spasm caused by an irritation of the soft palat.

I like to call it back breathing, and it's nothing too serious if you stop it. I hold my dog's nose shut until he stops doing it, and it seems to help.
