My 14 year old is getting braces, we just got back from the consultation and I was told total bill is going to be over $6000.00
I am going to pay $124 a month for 24 months after putting $855 down. I told my son that that was a small car payment as far as I was concerned and he better be able to hop on them and ride 'em to school....

Is this a normal amount for just regular 'ole braces? What are they where you live? We are in Illinois

That sounds about right. I think mine were about $5,000. The cost depends on how much work they're going to have to do and the estimated time-frame. Your son might need some extra stuff. Ask the dentist if they can give you an itemized list of what your son's getting. You can also go to another orthodontist for a second opinion. The first guy I went to wanted to do some really invasive stuff that I wasn't comfortable with and he was going to charge a lot. The second guy had a different plan for me and was less.

It's better for your son to get his teeth fixed now while he's still growing. If he does it later as an adult, it will hurt a lot more because his teeth will be set. Fixing them is really worth it, not only for his self-esteem but for his health. Let him pay for his own car.

Good luck.

That sounds like way too much for braces. Mine were only 2 or $3000 and I had them on for more than two years. Some orthodontists gave the estimate at $4000, so best to look around before picking an orthodontist.

That is way too much money for regular old metal braces. I live in California where everything costs more and I got Invisalign braces for 5,000. Invisalign is way better and more comfortable. You should check into getting them before spending an extra grand.

Yes, that sounds about right. It really depends on what they have to do to your kid's teeth.
