A friend of ours has a litter of kittens to give away and we weren't sure how long to wait. They were born around New Years.

i would say at the end of this month. (febuary 28th) or at the first week of march. When they are ready to eat hard kitty chow and know how to use the litter box, then i would say they are ready. People say the best time is when they are 2 months and 2 weeks.

Good luck!

OMG. Some people who have answered here have never even seen a kitten I am sure of it.

I think ideally you will want to give the kitten 8 weeks with its mom before you take it. If it has to go earlier, then I wouldn't do it any earlier than 6 weeks.

We found our orphaned kittens at 5 weeks in an open field and my feeling was (when they tried to nurse my armpit) that it was too soon to be away from their mom. I think another couple weeks would have been good. They turned out great overall anyway, but one of them is still quite needy. I think that might be why.

According to my vet the best time to separate a kitten from its mother is between
seven and eight weeks of age. It is at this point that weaning
has been completed (the switch from nursing mother's milk to
eating solid food) and a kitten can best adjust to living in a
strange home with a new family. If taken away too early, kittens
may have to be bottle-fed by their new families and frequently
behave badly due to premature departure from the nest.

Kittens need milk feeding for the first four to five weeks of
life, so formula needs to be provided for a newborn kitten in
cases where the mother cat is unable to nurse it. If a kitten is
orphaned when it's two weeks old, for example, it needs to be
bottle-fed for at least another two weeks until it can be
introduced to solid food at four weeks.

I have gotten kittens that were seven weeks old. If you get a kitten too early they will need kitten milk which you can get at the pet store. It's not that easy to bottle feed a kitten. It sounds like the kittens are way too young. When kittens are weened too early they will focus on you as the mother and try to nurse on you. It's important that they have this time with their mother.

The usually time is 6 to 8 weeks. Yes eating food is what you want really important. MAKE SURE MOM HAS TAUGHT THEM TO USE THE LITTER BOX. I have 3 cats. Two from same mom different litters. I took them home about at 5 and a half week the first one knew how to use the box. The second one did too but he had not learned how to cover his poo. At 7 years old he still does not do it.
If you get them around at this time you will be able to bond with them.

the SPCA waits untill they are 6-8 weeks old before putting them up for adoption. my suggestion would be to wait until they can eat cat food, and are off their mother's milk. 6-8 weeks is a pretty good time.
