Like it seems so hard for my younger brotheres (15 and 17) to put away a box of cereal in the morning. When i get up its still sitting out.*and no its not because i'm going to eat it, i don't eat breakfast* It just sits there opened. I end up putting it away, or sometimes throwing it away, because its empty.

Why is it so hard to put away food boxes or bags?

I'm really not sure why this is so hard for some people and not so hard for others. I had two roommates who never thought to do this and now my husband doesn't, either.

The only explanation I can give you is that I think there are people who are born organized and people who are more side-tracked. It sounds like you are more born organized. It makes sense to you that if you have gotten out a box of cereal, poured yourself a bowl, and are down with it - you put it away. Your brothers it seems are more side-tracked. They get out the box of cereal, pour themselves a bowl, sit down, eat it, realize they're running late for school, have to get dressed, can't find their homework, and have to leave. Who remembers that they had out a box of cereal.

Just the mindset as explained by my husband.

This is almost always the doing of a man. Here's why:

Getting a bowl of cereal requires a bowl, a spoon, the cereal and milk. Maybe sugar.

The Feeding Routine stops when these have been assembled; the next step is to gobble up the cereal, and then abandon the bowl.

Nowhere in this series of tasks is there a logical place (in a man's mind) for cleaning up the scene of the crime. Stopping to put away cereal delays the all-important Feeding; putting it away after eating never occurs to him. After all, the Feeding is over. End of story.

It's up to the civilized members of the household (usually women) to strictly enforce cleanliness and order...unless you LIKE playing unthanked housemaid to other adults.

They're just preoccupied and thinking of other things. A cereal box is no big thing but leaving the milk out deserves some kind of "lecture".

I suggest you have your own stash of cereal hidden away where they cannot find it. When you stop putting their cereal away for them and it gets all stale and moth ridden - maybe then they will think about putting it away. Plus, I always think it is good to mention that you will no longer be putting their cereal away for them.

Has anyone ever mentioned to them that they do this and that they need to change their behavior?

If you keep doing what you have always done, you will keep getting what you have always gotten. Start teaching them how to deal with this the proper way.
