I have a pair of zebra finches. The female layed 5 eggs this week but hasnt sat on them at all. Does this mean they arent fertile or is she just not interested in them? Is there anything I can do to help her?

I have a male and a female and believe me they definetely know what they are doing. If there have been 5 eggs for the last 2-3 days is it safe to take them out and try again?

I will try to answer this: First off: did you condition your birds for nesting? Are they in a quiet undisturbed area? most birds will not set on a nest until they are finished laying their last egg. then they will sit. we have had up to 7 eggs from zebra finches before so just hang in there and try not to disturb her. If you have provided them with the right diet, room temp. ,12 to 14 hrs of light they will be fine. first eggs are usually infertile but not all the time. You may be surprised in a few days enjoy...........

Maybe you have touched the eggs. The natural oils on your hands can be enough for the female and male to reject the eggs. If you want to touch them, make sure you wash your hands very good before handling the eggs. But if she is not sitting on them, it may only mean she is not finish laying eggs. She will start sitting on them only once she finish laying them. A zebra finch can lay between 2-8 eggs. So you may have a few more coming. Also, they are suppose to lay one egg a day, so how come she have 5 eggs after 2-3 days?.... Anyways, good luck with it !

If she has a nest to lay them in, try taking it out. My finches only laid eggs when we had a nest put in for them. Having it removed and put back in in a month or so might give your birds enough of a break from laying eggs (which is hard on the body!) so that when you put it back in she will sit on and take care of the eggs.

they will not sit on them until the last egg is laid, as we have found out. now my grand-daughter has a nestbox with 5 chicks, both male and female birds are taking it in turns to feed them

you need to keep her busy and get her a little house if nothing works you have to show the bird how to sit on them maybe your bird does not know what eggs are.

She may be too young. I would look up finch breeding online and make sure you provide her with extra calcium so she does not become eggbound.
