Boy or girl? I like to go contemporary...
For a boy, I would recommend "Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon... music and lyrics here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrfi8-9JVtE
I've been singing this to my son since he was born... it's such a sweet song.
For a girl, I'd go with "Father & Daughter" by Paul Simon. Listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tHaGlTDYJw
For the lyrics, you can always look them up by doing a search for "lyrics "
Both have references to "father" or "daddy" in them, but a mom can easily adapt those to "mother" or "mommy" -- that's what I do when I sing "Beautiful Boy" to my son ;o).

I used to always sing "Away In A Manger" to my babies. My favorite verse is:
"Be with me Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
close by me forever
And love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children
in Thy tender care
and take us to heaven
to live with Thee there."

"Under the Board Walk" always put my niece and nephew to sleep...It's an easy song to "rock" (as in rocking chair)..to as well..My brother would also talk to you in the songs cadence so as not to wake them up...
