I own a D70s and a D200. They say that the D80 is a lot closer to the D200 than it is to the D70s. It has the same image processor and it has the same 10 MP sensor. The D80 has an actual glass penta-prism while the D70s has a mirror "prism." While I have no complaints about the D70s viewfinder, the D80 should be brighter. The D200 certainly is.

The physical size of the D70 and the D80 are virtually the same and the control layout is very similar. Based on my experience working with D70s images vs. D200 images, I can say that the D80 should be quite a bit better than the D70s. First of all, just having 10 MP instead of 6 MP is a quantum leap. Yeah, yeah, yeah, if you "only" intend to do full size prints and rarely crop, 6 MP is more than anyone needs, but when you see what you can do with the middle 10% of a 10 MP image compared to the same fraction of a 6 MP image, there is no comparison.

What it comes down to in a REAL sense is choosing whether you want an excellent 6 MP camera or an excellent 10 MP camera. To me, that is the summary of the advantages and disadvantages that make a difference. The D80 has a few upscale features that justify the price, but the ones that will matter every day are the pixel count and improved image processing.

The reality check involved here is that the D80 costs about $300 more than the D70s - if you can find EITHER camera in stock anywhere. I guess the retailers have not recovered from the Christmas shopping boom.

If you have the budget, you are right. Get the D80.
