I look pretty much like my avatar, and my hair's cut almost exactly like that right now, but I would like to try something different and shorter. Do you have any suggestions?

Layers near the cheekbone is best. I have attached some sites though that give examples and photos to help you decide. short hair cuts look good on an oval face. if you have long hair lots of layers are a good look too.

for the millionth time....as this question is asked a thousand times a day. ....Look at some photos and take them to your hairstylist and ask what would look best on you. Your not cutting your hair we are. We know what were doing do you?
