I have a new 'hobby' actually passion - I've switched from treadmill to running outside - love it! question is ... are there temperatures that are either too hot or too cold to run in? I'd say the warmest it's been is 95degrees and coldest 17degrees.. I'm in the NE. I'm actually training for my first 5K in March...thank you

What's important is how YOU feel about the temperature. I am in N.E. as well and there are many a morning that I would rather stay in the house and drink coffee. I think what drives me out the door is knowing how good I will feel after my run. The more you run outdoors, the better you will get an understanding on how your body reacts. I, as with many runners, don't do well in high humidity and personally like the cooler weather to run in.

If you are thinking about going for a run in the severe cold, stay close to home so that you can stop in add/remove clothing as necessary. I am usually a bit chilly for the first mile or so when I run in the winter. Then once I warm up I'm glad I didn't over dress.

Good luck, Stay warm!!

Most Runners will say it is never to cold to run, as long as you dress for the weather, as far as too hot you need to be careful not the get heat exhaustion, the temperature can vary by whom you talk to. be sure to take water with you once you feel thirsty it maybe to late and you may become dehydrated. Listen to your body if you feel dizzy weak sluggish during a hot run stop and walk.I get a lot of information off the Runners World website. I either go back to running on my treadmill or do some cross training in extreme temperatures. I normally will not run if it is over 85 or under 25, but that is a personal preference. in the cold I don't like breathing in cold air and I don't like wearing a scarf over my mouth and nose.

yeah, I live in Phoenix. It is still 97 at 5am in the summer, but that is when I have to run, if I want to get it in and i hate running on treadmills. Good advice above, and if it is hot, carry water/Gatorade mix with you and learn to drink while you run. There are handheld devices at your running store that help... I trained for a marathon with one!!!

You have to get used to the temperature you will be running your 5K in. If it will be @ 10a.m., find out what the temperature averages for that time of year, time of day. You will be fine. And good luck!!!! You will be hooked after your first 5K! I was!

Hi,
Congratulations on the switch. I live in Vegas, and even though I run at 5:00 am it is often in the upper eighties to low nineties at this time of day(during the summer). With the proper clothing of "wicking", wind resistant material, you should be able to stay dry enough not to catch a chill back there. But, perhaps even more important is to stay well hydrated. Alot of people think
that hydration is only a problem for us desert rats, but the truth is that dehydration is a bigger problem for beggining runners in cooler climates, as they often underestimate their needs or don't "feel" thirsty. Staying hydrated will help regulate your core temperature as well as keep your skin moisturized and therefore better equipped to control perspirstion.

Yes running outdoors is sooo much better than the treadmill, congratulations! I think I agree with your temperatures (I am more used to Celsius being from Canada). There is worse weather than too cold or too warm, like during spring when every path is either icy or muddy, during summer on a smoggy day, during fall when the rain is ice cold...

Yeah I live in New England too and It's tough I run Outdoor track for Minnechaug regional highschool. It's really tough to warm up effectively and have the mentality to run in cold weather or warm weather.. But for myself, I run in Under armor pants and tops. But a good temperature, for me atleast, is about 50-65 degrees. it's not too hot and not too cold.

O I'm a runner by heart. It can never be too hot or too cold. We can handle it. I've run i 85-90 degree days to 30 degree days. As long as you wear the right clothing your fine in the winter, cap, long sleeve shirt, shorts with track pants underneathe, gloves.

Summer is, wear a less as possible, and drink lots of water! AND LOTS OF WATER AGAIN!
