I would like to track down a 1983 vehicle that I used to own (back in 83). Carfax only goes back to 1986.

Chances are this vehicle is no longer "alive" (so to speak) but I am trying to find out alternate ways to find out this information since Carfax can't help due to its age.

Any suggestions as to where, or how to look?

Wreckers, but the chances that it is still alive is pretty good. I got an 84. My last car was 25 year old and I sold it driveable. It depends... I still see 57 chevs and older Fords on the road daily (as well as 70's muscle cars) So, you may not be in any luck with the wreckers.
Auto regestars office perhaps?

Is your VIN less than 17 characters? 1981 was the year when auto manufacturers adopted the standardized VIN system, so you may still be in luck with your 1983 model. Try Experian's AutoCheck service: http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2243588-10415671
It's similar to Carfax and will give you a free lookup.
Good luck!

Carfax couldn't help anyway since they don't give out information as to owners names or addresses. No one will, since this is restricted information, not available to the public.

Information is available only to:

Current owner
Law enforcement
Tow companies with actual possession of the vehicle
Insurance companies with a claim again the vehicle.
