My 1 year old female boxer just chews and chews on her feet until they bleed. I can understand cleaning themselves, but chewing until they bleed that doesn't make sense. I have another boxer and she doesen't chew on her feet.

Your boxer may have allergies. My golden retriever did the same thing when her allergies were really bad.

Check her dog food. make sure that it doesn't contain any by products, or corn (hard to digest) or wheat. Wheat is usually the #1 culprit for skin allergies.

Also look into purchasing the dandruff shampoo Tegrin. Not head n shoulders. That also has been a life saver for my Golden.

If switching her food doesn't work look around the house for allergy agents - detergent, are you using a capret deoderizer, even fabreeze can be a cause.

The vet will probably prescribe prednisone (a steroid). Try switching her food, try the shampoo, and then as a last resort look around the house for allergy agents. IF there is nothing then talk to the vet about medication.

Good Luck

Feed chewing is a very common sign of allergies, generally contact allergies like pollen, grasses, or molds. Also, some dogs will chew/lick their feet repeatedly out of boredom creating a wound called a lick granuloma. These are notoriously hard to clear up. I would suggest starting her on a regular dose of Benedryl (or generic diphenhydramine) three times a day ( call your vet for dosages) and schedule an appointment to see your vet. The constant licking and chewing can lead to infections (pyoderma) in the skin of the feet that might need antibiotics to clear up. Your vet can also give you more info an allergies and what kinds of tests or treatments he/she recommend to prevent this from happening again.

When dogs chew on their paws, it's a signal that they may have allergies of some kind. The only way to find out is by going to the vet and having and allergy test done on her. The vet will prescribe medication to help her. Until she see's a vet though, there's not much you can do, except trying to keep it as clean as possible, from the bleeding. Hope she's better soon.

They just had a vet on our local news this morning answering this very question. He considered allergies but doubted it to be true in this case because of our local weather. But depending on your climate, that could be the case and would show up more between the pads. He also indicated it could be a yeast infection or simply a compulsive behavior. My Lab had a similar problem 4 or 5 years ago. It went on for about 3 weeks. Our vets were stumped and our best guess was he got into some lawn chemicals or something. Good luck.

The most common reason a dog chews the feet is food allergies. If u are feeding a dog food with corn and by-products in it that is more than likely the problem. canidae, solid gold, wellness, california natural, dick van pattens formula and innova are a few all natural dog foods with none of the junk that is bad for your dog.

Sounds like your Boxer has an allergy. Constant paw chewing usually indicates a food allergy.

I'm thinking your dog has dermititus or has an allergy.
I suggest you see your vet who should be able to give you some powder or tablet to relive the allergy.
