I am in my early twenties and the mother of a very busy three year old. I am also a full time student and wife. I babysit for a developmentally delayed 1 yr old and a 2 yr old. My life is very hectic and in the past few months, maybe once or twice a week, when i am laying in bed ready to go to sleep I start feeling very anxious, antsy and overwhelmed like something is going to happen. I just get this very weird feeling that I have NO control over. Like I just want to scream. It usually goes away after an hour or so but I have to try relaxing myself and thinking of something peaceful in order to get the feeling to go away. I am not sure if it is anxiety or what. Maybe I just have too much too handle right now. Anybody have an answer??

Yes, that sounds like anxiety and possibly panic attack. I used to have both just after the birth of my son. Panic/anxiety typically come on in cases of extreme stress, messed up hormones, or a thyroid problem. It's your body's way of telling you something is wrong and it needs to be fixed. There are several options that I would recommend:
1) de-stress your life. Perhaps take less classes or take a semester off. Cut down on babysitting. Have someone babysit your 3 year old while you go do something relaxing.
2) Going to a weekly (or even daily) massage or accupressure treatment can work wonders for anxiety/panic. A professional can teach you how to fully relax your body. When my panic attacks were less severe, this worked wonders.
3) got to a doctor and make sure it's not a thyroid problem.
4) If it seems to be getting out of control, and your anxiety/panic is affecting you so much that you can't function normally: look into medication. I was in a constant state of panic after my son was born. I couldn't sleep, eat, take care of my newborn. Antidepressants work wonders with anxiety and (Zoloft specifically) saved my life. I only needed to take it for 4 months before weening off. I've been using relaxation techniques ever since, and it's under control now.
Anxiety is so awful, I wish you the best!

You have too much going on. Cut the school and the babysitting. You can't be both a full time student and a full time wife- you can only do both part time.
Focus on your own child and husband-- I'm sure they'd like some of your time and attention.
If this persists, see a doctor about hormone rebalancing, especially if you used to or currently use birth control pills.

You obviously do have too much to handle, and it IS anxiety.
You need some time for yourself. Maybe just 30 minutes a day where you go for a walk or jog, or drink some tea and let your brain catch up.

Anxiety can cause other health problems. It worries me that you say 'full time wife' Is your husband a 'full time husband'? Is he helping with the kid? Or are you SOL on that front? If you're doing things for your husband and he's not doing things for you, then you need to talk.

Feel better!

Yes, this will get worse if you don't handle it now, work on removing stress, exercise, you have to make time for you and your health, or all the work will be for nothing. Deep breathing is the way to settle anxiety, and learning to relax is the key

it really does sound like anxiety and yes, you do have a lot going on. i'd say by the time your day is over you are exhausted too. try sleepy time tea or herbs before bed to help you relax.

Go to this website which is very good: www.panicsurvivor.com. You can read many stories and try to relate. If you think something is wrong there usually is. Good luck to you.
