The first person to be awarded the medal of Honor, was
PVT. Jacob Wilson Parrot on March 25, 1863.

Bernard J. D. Irwin was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor on Feb. 11th, 1861.

6 of Andrews' Raiders were the 1st to be actually presented the Medal of Honor. Several had earned it earlier but they were the 1st to be awarded & presented it.
Over 250 were purged including the 1st & only woman at the time. They decided to many were receiving it.

I'm not positive, but I think it was Sgt. Alvin York in WW I. I think the Congressional Medal of Honor was conceived to award outstanding bravery above and beyond the call of duty and Sgt. York surely deserved the honor. Audie Murphy earned one in WW II.
