I'm on a powerful alienware laptop which I bought in June last year, it is not dual core but considering it cost £2500 I'd guess it's meant to be quite powerful, but still it never runned fast, it took 3 minutes to get to the log on screen, and then a further 2 to start up my user, and all I have on startup is MSN, Trend Micro and a couple of other small progs. I guess a format might help, so I would back up everything, but wondering what the best OS for me to go to would be?

Currently I'm on Media Center, I can buy Vista, or go to Win XP (Not sure which is faster Pro or Home)

Thanks.

Media Centre is XP. Wouldn't get Vista until the first update comes out in a couple of months.

If you have a £2500 laptop that takes 5 minutes to start up, it needs a bit of a health check. You need to check what else is starting up when it boots up. Run msconfig and check the startup tab.
I agree with those who say don't try Vista yet. If you're on Media Center I take it you mean XP, should be faster than that.

If you are having trouble with the PC's speed, just move down to Windows XP, try also to go into the bios and tell it only to check the harddrive as a boot device, also most m/b's have a fast boot options that you could activate to speed up the boot time

Stick with Xp. You'll just be beta testing Vista if you buy it when it's out and it's going to be a holy pain for ages until they fix all the bugs and security issues that all new windows systems have

Stay with XP. Vista won't be usable until SP1 at least.
