Before you buy VISTA read the articles at:

Linux operating systems are excellent. Try out one of the free distributions. My favorite is UBUNTU. You can download it, or order a CD, at
http://www.ubuntu.com .
You will also get all the software, that you will ever need, FREE - See

appropriate-click My pc and choose residences. interior the equipment residences window that looks, look below the equipment: header. A sixty 4-bits (x64) version of abode windows would be of course pointed obtainable. If that is not any longer, you're utilising a 32-bits (x86) version.

if you run into an error it would just roll itself back to previous state so feel free to try.
In any case, you could save your files to disc and just format the drive and do a clean install. Or even create a new partition if you want a trial run with the new system and keep xp on a seperate boot.

I am not sure, but I did hear that if you do an "upgrade" to vista....instead of full version...it will remove the validation for your XP.

I wouldn't think so. That's why it's half the price in the US.
