I think the should be promoted, if for no other reason, than to let young folks know the program exist. I frequently talk to young folks, mostly in the poor neighborhoods, about the Peace Corps and how it could give them some good life experience.

Yes the Peace Corps gets federal funding for ads. They simply don't advertise much now-a-days b/c the cause-de-jour is not theirs. Additionally, the requirements to join the PC as opposed the US Military, is much higher. A convicted felon can join the Army with very little Q about his past crimes. A PC candidate must satisfactorily pass an in-depth background check, an education test standard, provide a needed skill, and a personal financial (credit check) and income tax report! Go figure.

Good point - I see them occassionally, but not often. I guess after the 60's, they didnt need to advertise cuz all the hippies were joining up to make a difference. Now, we NEED men willing to die in a foreign country in an unjust war for crappy pay, so the military gets all the funding...

The Peace Corps is only taking one out of four applicants, at the moment. (I asked). When I served, it was one out of ten. They have a small advertising budget. You see ads for them here and there. They don't need a lot of advertising. They get lots and lots of inquiries about career opportunities withou advertising.

I remember as a kid there were those "The toughest job you'll ever love" commercials, but I haven't seen one in a long time.
