I take Tylenol #3, Oxycodone, and I recently ate some Pistachio nuts. The only thing that I have reacted before, subtle hives on my shoulders and chest, was from the oxycode. So I stopped taking it, then I tried taking oxycode again and I was OK until yesterday, the day after I ate some pistachio nuts. Now I have hives all over my body...what should I do, do I have to go to the emergency room for an anti-histimine shot or can I stop taking my medication and it will go away? Can I still take Tylenol #3?

Perhaps your allergic to pistaccios not tylenol, since that is what is different this time. If so you can keep taking tylenol, and you should probably go the the docotr office no matter what the cause is if you have hives all over your body.

I'd say its a lot more likely that you came in contact with some irritant that you weren't aware of. Sometimes this sort of thing can be caused something as inconspicuous as switching to a different brand of laundry detergent. I'd say that if your reaction was that strong, and you ingested the allergin, you'd be hospitalized by now and would already be dead, or have figured out what caused it. Allergic reactions are progressive, meaning they usually only get worse over time, but they also tend to be very quick reactions. Anything that happened more than a few hours before the outbreak can probably be discounted as the cause.

On a personal note, I sincerely hope for your sake that you actually suffer from a condition that warrants the consumption of such powerfully addictive narcotics. Be careful when you stop taking Oxycodone, the withdrawals can be debilitating.

Well, Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that consists of the swelling around the trachea (windpipe), therefore compromising the airway. You may have suffered an allergic reaction, but it is not necessarily anaphylaxis. In your case, I would definitely go to the doctor and find out what caused your reaction. My guess is the pistachio nuts, but it could be other things as well.

I hope you find yourself allergic to Oxycodone, I would like to know you don't take it any more, it is a powerful, addictive drug.

Anyway, you should ask a doctor about your best course of action about the drugs and the pistatios,

That being said, you might be able to control the hives with an over the counter drug called Benedryl...The spelling might be slightly off but it is pronouced "Ben-eh-Drill"

Good luck

Are you having trouble breathing? Have you had a reaction to pistachio nuts before? If you have benedryl, I'd try taking that first and see if it cares for your hives. Or in the meantime, call your doc and ask him or her these questions.

Anaophylactic shock is a severe life threatening and sometimes fatal reaction to an injection or ingestion of a substance like Pencillin, shellfish, peanuts or the like.. You have to have had it before and become sensitized to it. You don't have a reaction the first time you take it or ingest in. You rbody has to have built histamine reactions against it first.... by being exposed to it.
Symptoms include weakness, shortness of breath, pharangeal edema (throat swelling) cardiac and respiratory abnormalities.

It is probably the pistachio's becuase they are more likely to have caued the mild reaction you are describing. Go to the doc or call them,
