I remember back in the 80's, if you shake a soda can just a little, you and your friends will be showered in Coca Cola. Now the vending machines drop the can really hard and nothing happens when you open it... Why...?

The machines have been designed to handle the containers more gently. That keeps them from getting shook up.

They are also colder than they used to be. The colder the pop is, the more the CO2 stays dissolved in the liquid, instead of coming out as bubbles as soon as you open the can.

b/c the machines are newer they use to just roll out now they drop them right by the opening so they don't shake up as much
