they're blinking seconds off...

So you can tell that its working and not frozen at some particular segment display. You ever wake up in the middle of night, look at the clock then close your eyes for what seam a long time then look at the clock again and the time hasn't changed? The blinking let you know that is working and the perception of time passed is only in you head.
