Greyhounds are excellent in the house. They love to lounge and sleep when indoors. You can get a retired racing greyhound for very little. They don't shed much. HOWEVER, I don't know if there is such thing as a "cheap" dog. Getting doggie health insurance can help a little, but regardless of the dog expect to pay $100.00 a year in flea meds, $100.00 a year on heartworm pills, $30.00 a year for check ups, $30.00 or so a year for shots needed, $15 a year for a license, depending on the dog anywhere from $15- $100 a month for food. They are so worth it though. Good Luck

When and if my dogs have to spend time outside i provide a Dogaloo. They are not overly expensive or but they are not cheap. They are on the higher end of the price range. They are easy to clean since the bottom will snap off the top and you can scrub it outside and inside. Its shaped great so the wind cant come in. It looks like a little igaloo. ITs hard for the dog to get on it and stand or to chew extensively on it. Its made of durable plastic/fiberglass. You can stuff it full of blankets or straw for bedding. Also I have mine on a platform about a foot off the ground and that space is stuffed with straw. Getting the house off the ground in cold weather is a MUST. I do also put up a wind block around the house with some plywood. This is what I found works nice, but my dogs dont live outside and never spend that long of time outside so I only use it for fosters that are adjusting from outdoor life to life inside.

OHSUZANNA YOUR TOTALLY RIGHT hahahah sorry if you are asking about breeds of dogs, then there are so many dogs out there that are great. Try a mutt, do some online research, get a book with all the breeds in it. They are good at telling you. Cheap is a mixed breed depending on if they are these new "designer" dogs then you will pay same as a purbred but dont be fooled Designer dogs are just mutts with cutsie poopsie made up names. Just read adds in the paper, and go to the shelters.

Little short haired dogs are good house dogs, although expense really shouldn't come into the equation with a pet. If you really don't have a lot of money right now, a pet probably isn't a responsible choice. What if it gets sick and needs vet care? That's not cheap. You need to figure out what you can actually set aside for pet care before you think about getting a dog. Maybe a goldfish or a hampster is more your speed right now.

A small, short haired dog that is intelligent would be the cleanest. Stupid dogs are hard to house train. Sorry, I don't know specifics because I like big dogs, but a search of 'small intelligent dogs' brought up lots of links and this dog selector... http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.selectsmart.com%2FDOG%2F&ei=UTPCRZmdGqXWqwLb1uiICg&usg=__hwbCuHk-M7-0uy4_V6B_QTlKgcg=&sig2=78HnpjDGzZGDnXhYU6rmyw

My relatives had a pek-a-poo (pekingese/poodle mix that was very smart, clean, well-behaved, and great with kids).

My dogs have all come from the humane society for about $90. That price includes a coupon for a free or significantly discounted spay/neuter operation.

You might also find a free dog that's already trained and fixed for free in the paper if you don't have to have a puppy.

All the people above are right in the fact that it is expensive to own a pet.

First, let me say that no dog is cheap. Dogs need yearly vet visits, shots, and year-round heart-worm & flea medication. On top of that there is food, treats, leash, collar, toys, a bed, cage, brush, etc. They also need to be liscensed.
The best house dogs are usually the toy breeds. Like toy poodles, chihuahuas, and small dogs like that.
I'm not sure if you mean a dog that keeps themself clean, or that doesn't make a mess, but I don't think there's any dog that is "clean" without work from the owner. Dogs with short hair tend to shed less and feel less dirty, but any dog will make a mess if given the chance and will need regular baths.

For one to ask this question you are obviously not ready for a dog! No matter what kind of dog you get they get sick, need shots, food, baths, brushed etc. Dogs make messes, shed, pee and poop. Unless you up for ever-thing that come with a dog don't get one!

A miniature schnauzer, they're bright, don't shed much and are great companion dogs.
