They are probably in heat. They love to rub their necks on the doors because it feels good.

All normal. No worries.

Are your cats males or females?

If they are females, they might just be going into heat for the first time - that would be the first thing I think of when I hear of "howling" because howling is very typical for female cats when they come into heat, as is rubbing on things, rolling across the floor, and presenting their butts (sticking their butt into the air).

If that's the case, it's an easy fix - once they are over their heat, take them in to your vet and have them spayed. Not only will they stop this behavior because they will no longer go into heat, but you will also never end up with an unwanted litter of kittens.

If they are not females, you may want to consider other causes. My one cat will "howl" when she has "killed" a toy - she's announcing the kill. Some cats also randomly get "the rips" where they start running around the house, play-chasing something that isn't there - sometimes meowing loudly.

The rubbing is part of normal cat behavior. Cats have scent glands on their chins, paw pads, and butts, that they use to "mark" territory by rubbing on it / scratching. (Most of the time when cats scratch they are not sharpening their claws, but marking territory.)

Sounds like your cat needs to be spayed or neutured.

If its a female, they will rub on the floor or become very affectionate and howl for a companion to hear them.

My cats did this and it drove me crazy until i bit the dust and had them fixed.

Now she is quiet. She has gained a little weight but her disposition is much better then she was. She stays around the yard now and loves the indoors as much as the outside.

Good luck

If they are female and not spayed I'd say that they are in heat and crying for a mate to come and take care of business. Cats have glands under their necks that secrete pheromones that will attract a male cat. This is a way that the cat marks their territory.

first off they howl because they are in heat,
and rubbing thee necks on the doors is the way they leave their sent letting other cats know that this is their territory. there is nothing wrong with your cat it what they do.

My cats rub on stuff all the time...
They are both spayed and it usually means they just want us to pet them. Then again my cats are very strange, one walks around howling all the time. We have no idea why, and when we stop to give her attention, she walks away.
I'm pretty sure all cats are pretty strange, because whenever I tell someone this, they tell me crazy stuff their cats do.

My cat is 3 and keeps clawing to get into doors. Try getting them a toy. My cat has tons of them but it has not worked for him. Sorry but I think your stuck with this.

If your cats are not fixed then they are definitely in heat. Please get them spayed or neutered as soon as possible. The SPCA, local animal rescues and even PETCO have low cost spay/neuter clinics. Getting them fixed will make them more comfortable and ensure that if they were to get out they don't come back with kittens. In addition, if you have males they can begin to spray in the house to mark their territory. Please, as someone who has taken care of way too many abandoned kittens, get your cats fixed. It's the responsible thing to do.

If female they might be in heat. If just playing, they are talking and marking the doorframe with their facial pheromones... they rub up to mark and say all is well.
If they seem to be in pain, that is another issue and warrants a vet visit.

Cats are insane. Everyone knows this is true. Stop looking for odd behavior. Whateva cats do is 'normal'.
