According to a guy at work, he uses 1100 kwh per month or 36.67 per day. However, you should not use a number like this for planning. The first thing you should do for alternative energy is sharply reduce your energy consumption. Lots of insulation and sealing all heat loss points is a starting point. An all electric home that uses electric resistance heating is a very poor choice. A heat pump is a better way to provide heat. Depending on where you are in the country, a wood stove may be the alternative heat source for a few cold days.
To design a house, you need to put it in a specific place so you can determine how many heating days and how much cooling is needed. If you do a lot of insulation, then a critical factor is how much the temperature swings at various times of the year. A place that gets quite warm, but still has cool nights can lose heat at night and need little air conditioning during the day. A place that stays cold may be able to use passive solar if most of the winter days are not cloudy.
