I think it really depends on how you feel about each other and the intention behind the gift. The fact that you are asking about this means different thought are going through your head.
Do you feel like he likes you better that you do him. You may be feeling guilty that you are not on the same page with him. On the other hand you may be feeling like you need to do some thing in return (if you are an independent woman). You should not have to feel like this.
Think about it and why you asked this question at all. You dont wanna feel guilty or like you own him anything. Think it through and follow your heart.

Keep doing what he likes. You should probably get a diamond type gift more often than you have been getting. Also don’t get materialistic.
Give him feedbacks letting him know how much you appreciate the gift; you may want do this more than once over a period of time.
Not every one can afford such gift often.

Depends on how old you are. If you are still in your mid teens, it is a little too much of a present. But if you are in your late teens or early twenties, then it is a little more reasonable.
The other thing you have to consider is how long of a relationship you have had. Getting diamonds for your five year anniversary has different meaning than getting diamond for your one month anniversary.
