On my cat's back paw, one of his nails is shedding the casing. When I went to clip his claws, I found that somehow it had started bleeding inside. I clipped the nail just the tiniest of bits, without going into the quick. I'm not sure what to do to help him. He acts normal, but if you touch the foot he complains and whines. Can I peel the casing off and try to stop any blood flow with like, cooking flour or something? He's still moving, jumping, playing like normal -- no tenderfooting or complaining.

Yes, I do need to clip my cats claws. The front claws grow into talons, and I don't want them growing into their paws, nor slicing open my toes when they decide to run like crazy cats out of the back room and run over my feet. The back ones I hardly ever clip. So I didn't clip it way short and have him get hurt by that.

Oh...and um...no outdoor kitties. It's not safe and I don't agree with it at all.

He didn't start bleeding when I clipped him..he was bleeding already. I never cut the quick on their nails. He is just shedding the casing around his nail and it's bleeding on him.

It is important to clip the claws with a proper tool that is sharp enough to not crush the claw and damage its sheathing, or you may have clipped a little too much. A small guillotine clipper is often helpful.
WHen there is bllod, you can dip the paw in some cornstarch to help stop the bleeding if it is not bleeding too much.
This is not usually serious, but keep an eye on it and if it worsens or secrets liquid, see a vet quickly.

I'm not sure I understand. usually when you say your cat is declawed, it is the front paws only but you feel it is the back claws that are bleeding. If you had the back claws declawed, I think a trip to the vets is in order to see what is going on. May need to be re-glued and needs antibiotics. If not, is his back claws very long? Maybe they need to be clipped. You really need to look at the Kitty's paws and figure out what is going on or take him to a vet.

If you cut a cat's claws too short, you end up cutting into a part of it called the "quick". Take a look at a claw, and only cut up to the point that is still translucent. The whiter section before that is the quick and has blood vessels. A cat should not be bleeding after having his nails trimmed.

I think you should take your cat to the vet. Not only will the vet be able to stop the bleeding, but will be able to make sure that no infection occurs and probably safely remove the casing for you.
Do you really need to clip your cats claws? Your cat will naturally wear it's own claws on a scratching post and during outdoor activities. If you insist - please ask your vet to do it in future, so that your cat doesn't get hurt again.
All the best.x

Don't try to tear his claw off. That would probably only hurt him worse, especially when you don't really know what the problem is to begin with. If you're really worried, go to a vet--that's what they're for. Or you could call your vet and see if you can talk over the phone, to see how serious the vet thinks it is. If he seems to be fine unless you actually touch his foot, you could wait and observe if you don't want to go to the vet.
I hope he gets better!

When my cats were declawed, to discourage bleeding, the vet asked for us to keep them in a small room (bathroom) so they could relax and not move around very much. After two or three days, their claws were pretty much healed, so we let them out. If they started bleeding again, we just went back to the vet's instructions.
Good luck.
